His debut novel, Let the Right One In, appeared in Sweden in 2004. Set in Blackeberg in the early 1980s, the story follows the friendship between bullied twelve-year-old Oskar and Eli, the strange new child who moves in next door. Lindqvist took the familiar mythology of the vampire and placed it amid apartment blocks, school bullying, alcoholism, isolation, and the bleak everyday life of suburban Sweden. The result became an international success and established him as one of the most distinctive voices in Scandinavian horror.

Let the Right One In also proved remarkably adaptable. Lindqvist wrote the screenplay for Tomas Alfredson's acclaimed 2008 Swedish film, while the novel later inspired the American film Let Me In, a stage adaptation, and a television series. Its influence helped carry his work far beyond Sweden and introduced international audiences to a form of Nordic horror grounded as much in social reality and emotional vulnerability as in supernatural terror.

His later novels continued to reshape familiar horror ideas. Handling the Undead imagines the recently deceased returning to life in Stockholm, but approaches the event through bereavement and the painful question of what people would actually do if their lost loved ones came back. Harbour brings supernatural darkness to the Swedish archipelago, while Little Star explores violence, celebrity culture, alienation, and adolescence. The Places trilogy, beginning with I Am Behind You, pushes further into surreal and existential horror, allowing reality itself to become unstable.

Lindqvist has also moved beyond the genre that first made his name. The Bloodstorm trilogy, beginning with The Writing in the Water, shifts toward crime and political thriller territory, following former police officer and crime writer Julia Malmros and hacker Kim Ribbing through investigations with increasingly dangerous consequences. The change of genre reveals something that has been present throughout his work: his stories depend less on any particular kind of monster than on carefully observed characters placed under extraordinary pressure.

Alongside his novels and short fiction, Lindqvist has written screenplays and plays. His story Border was adapted into the award-winning 2018 film of the same name, for which he co-wrote the screenplay. His literary career has brought him honors including the Selma Lagerlöf Prize and Göteborgs-Posten's Literature Prize, while his books have reached readers in more than thirty countries.

Despite the vampires, revenants and disturbances in reality, Lindqvist's horror rarely depends on the supernatural alone. His most memorable creatures tend to expose something already present in the world around them. Friendship can exist beside brutality, love can become frightening, and monsters can inspire more sympathy than the humans hunting them. That tension between the grotesque and the deeply ordinary has remained at the heart of his fiction from Let the Right One In onward.
