Our story

From Finland to an international book community

1996

The beginning

Risingshadow began in Finland when Mika Salovaara created a website for keeping track of Finnish translations of fantasy books. What started as a small book list gradually developed into a much larger literary community and database.

2001

The name Risingshadow

As the site and its community grew, the name Risingshadow was adopted. The Finnish site continued to expand its coverage of fantasy, science fiction, and speculative literature.

2007

Risingshadow.net launches

An English-language Risingshadow was launched with a focus on international fantasy and science fiction. Over time, its book and author database expanded to cover an increasingly broad range of speculative fiction.

Today

Still discovering what comes next

Risingshadow continues to grow alongside the books it follows. New releases, new authors, new series, and books announced years in advance are constantly being added as we work to make the database more useful for readers around the world.

Independent since the beginning

Risingshadow is independently maintained by people who love books. We are not a publisher or bookseller, and our database is built around helping readers explore speculative fiction rather than promoting a single publisher, author, or store.

Our Finnish roots

Risingshadow began as a Finnish website, and our original community continues at Risingshadow.fi. The Finnish site focuses on books published in Finnish, while Risingshadow.net follows the much broader international world of English-language fantasy, science fiction, and speculative fiction.
