The Sandman: Brief Lives

BOOK REVIEW

The Sandman: Brief Lives

Neil Gaiman

9/10Written Oct 9, 2014
Show review marked as a spoiler

The tittle tells it all, this is about many brief lives of mortals and Endless too as Morpheus and Delirium are set on a journey to find their missing brother. If the Gaiman's story is great, the artwork is absolutely amazing. I actually found myself sighing out loud at the beginning of the book when Morpheus is drawned depressed because his girlfriend has left him. And the end, after he's killed Orpheus and is shown in his realm, sitting in his chair, alone... heartbreaking.

The Causal Angel

BOOK REVIEW

The Causal Angel

Hannu Rajaniemi

7/10Written Sep 27, 2014

I salute Rajaniemi for writing this series. Even though there are parts of the story I really don't understand (Some of the story's physics go sooo over my head), the journey with Jean de Flambeur has been truly worth of reading. Excellent scifi and intriguing tale!

The King

BOOK REVIEW

The King

J. R. Ward

The King is a growth story of Wrath and Beth as they both still have some learning to do about being the royal couple.

I especially liked Wrath's story as he is and has been the king of his race merely cause he has to and is now lead to a choice if he really want's the job when a rival is risen.

Extra laughs for Lassiter lead wedding seremony, the scene was hilarious!

Can't wait for the BDB to return! The King left so many open questions, my heart's out for iAm and Trez atm, I've really fallen in of these Shadows - luckily they are the next in line! ;)

Silver Shadows

BOOK REVIEW

Silver Shadows

I've grown to like Bloodlines probably even more than the original Vampire Academy -series.
It has all the basic's of good YA novel, fast paced, eventful, agony & romance.

If you rule out the end chase through Vegas during which everything just went to hell (too many setback's, C'mon!), and the fact that none of them got the nerve to kill that god awful Sheridan; Silver Shadows provided nice plot on Sydney's captive and "re-education" time with the Alchemists.
...Even though, I would have liked to smack Adrian couple of times with fryin pan.

Ghost Train to New Orleans

BOOK REVIEW

Ghost Train to New Orleans

Mur Lafferty

6/10Written Aug 8, 2014

Ghost Train is darker and not as much fun as the first part of the Shambling Guides, which is a bit shame. There'd be so much potential on the characters.
Phil, Zoë's boss, is not involved in the story much, that was disappointment, since I really liked this "ordinary bloke" vampire at the first part. Arthur, Zoë's (almost zombi) boyfriend, on the other hand is in it -being a total twat!

We are handed a handfull of new god's, demons and characters at New Orleans and of course Zoë's stumbling in the middle.

So maybe not us fun, but entertaining enough to wait for the 3rd part of the series.

The Sandman: Fables & Reflections

BOOK REVIEW

The Sandman: Fables & Reflections

Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell

9/10Written Aug 1, 2014

Might be the best Sandman book I've read so far. All the tales were interesting with these historic (Ceasar, Marco Polo) religious (Even, Adam) etc. characters, their tales & secrets. But most of all I loved the tales of Orpheus, son of Morpheus.

The Three

BOOK REVIEW

The Three

Sarah Lotz

7/10Written Jul 27, 2014

First of all I liked the documentary style the book is written. It gives a certain touch of credibility, like you were reading an actual report of the event.

Secondly; using children as the base horror, even though some might find it clishé, is creepy and that gives a nice shiver to the story. So bravo on those.

But. The end solution of the Three didn't quite satisfy me. I'm a big fan of Stephen King, so I don't mind if there are few loose ends and stuff you have to figure out you own at the end, but Lotz seems to leave quite a lot speculations for the reader to decide what actually happened. And why.

Other than that The Three is quite good & fast paced story, slightly creepy, but didn't make me leave the lights on for the night... ;)

The Ocean at the End of the Lane

BOOK REVIEW

The Ocean at the End of the Lane

Neil Gaiman

8/10Written Jul 21, 2014

The thing about Gaiman books imo is that you either like 'em or you don't. And I liked this one very much.
Intriguing memory lane of childhood fairytale, by the eyes of 9 year old boy/adult man.
There a reason we don't remember some things happened long time ago as good as we should...

Fairytale for adults!

Tyrant's Stars: Parts Three and Four

BOOK REVIEW

Tyrant's Stars: Parts Three and Four

Hideyuki Kikuchi

6/10Written Jul 12, 2014

Slight disappointment compared to previous D novels.
Especially Matthew & Sue wandering off all the time, when they should have stayed still... Ugh, somebody should have tied their feet, I say! (Would have saved loads of trouble, just sayin...)

Best again: The left hand <3

* "If there's one thing this world needs more of, it's thoughtful Nobles," the left hand jeered. *

The Sandman: A Game of You

BOOK REVIEW

The Sandman: A Game of You

Good story, but suffers from the lack of Morpheus himselfi In this one he seems more like a side character than the main one.

The Shambling Guide to New York City

BOOK REVIEW

The Shambling Guide to New York City

Mur Lafferty

9/10Written May 16, 2014

Best 'light' book I've read in ages, I was laughing out loud more times than I can tell.

Starting off with Pratchett-like humour as Zoe get's to know her new co-workers and their habits (after she's first fainted at her job interview when she realized her boss really is a vampire), is hilarious at least.
Added pieces of the city guide for coteries (vampires, demons, spirit etc...)between chapters are fun addition to the book.
Love the different skill & qualities different coteries have! :D

Laffety makes you laugh, then suddenly pushes your face against something gore - and then makes you laught again 'till the end.

Definitely will read the next Shambling Guide!
