She never liked the look of her son-in-law's new wife.

The witch of the wood swore to never interfere in her daughter's marriage, but now her daughter is dead, leaving her two children at the mercy of a stepmother who doesn't want them. Hansel and Gretel don't know that she's their grandmother, but she's not going to let a detail like that keep her from making sure they make it through the winter, even if she must do it under the guise of villainy.
