I had a bit of trouble with Watch Me. I read this in Finnish. This dystopia, classified as young adult fiction and romance, is quite graphic at first with its depictions of violence. The book features, among other things, decapitations, children having their entrails ripped out, and a seven-year-old killing someone with a gun. Well, a dystopian world is a given.
The biggest problem is that the story’s world is described as if it were common knowledge to the reader; I, for one, was left wondering who the New Founders were, who the enemies were, what the “neuro” thing was, and what the sectors and regents were. These are probably explained in the seven-part prequel series Shatter Me, which hasn’t been translated into Finnish.
Toward the end, the main characters began to display some teenage-like emotional traits. They were muscular or beautifully ethereal—the kind you’d fall for. Romance enters the picture. Fortunately, the traumas are still there and will remain, so things don’t get too simple. The rawness remains. I’m not sure yet if I’ll continue reading the series, tho.
