Chains of Gold

Cerilla, a Lady of the sacred land of Catena, is destined to wed the Summerking, who – after consummation – will be sacrificed. But she and young Arlen, raised to die in triumphant ritual, fall in love at first sight and flee the ceremony of sacrifice, with the aid of Arlen's beloved comrade, Lonn, who dies in his place.

Universal outcasts, Arlen and Cerilla might survive their flight across the land to the apparent safety of the distant mountains... but it becomes apparent that they are pursued by an evil spirit, the ghost of Lonn, whose nobility and generosity and loyalty in life have not survived his death. His ghost, desiring only to be reuinited with Arlen, is possessed by the jealousy of Cerilla that Lonn felt at the moment of his death.

Even in the safety of the mountains, which they reach after many dangers and hair-breadth escapes, even after the birth of their child, the malign call of the ghost of Lonn persists, summoning Arlen back to a deadly reunion and Cerilla back to a final combat with the immortals of whom she was once beloved.
