This Means War!

Middle school isn’t for the faint of heart—but for Nate Wright, it’s the perfect stage for epic misadventures, cringe-worthy mishaps, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting. The Big Nate series captures the hilarious highs and humiliating lows of adolescence through the eyes of a kid who’s absolutely certain he’s destined for greatness… even if his teachers, classmates, and locker assignments suggest otherwise.

At its core, the series is a sharp, laugh-out-loud portrait of growing up with too much confidence and not quite enough luck. Nate’s world is filled with familiar players: loyal (if exasperated) friends, exasperated (if loyal) teachers, annoying siblings, and a never-ending stream of authority figures trying to rein in his imagination. But what makes these stories stand out is how they lean into the messiness of childhood—where dreams of stardom meet pop quizzes, and elaborate schemes for lunchroom domination collapse under the weight of a broken pencil.

Blending comic strip humor with full-length storytelling, the books move with the energy of a cartoon but carry the emotional smarts of a kid who’s figuring things out one detention slip at a time. There’s real heart beneath the jokes—an understanding of what it’s like to feel underestimated, to crave recognition, and to believe that your next big idea could finally be the one that works.

This series has found its way into classrooms, libraries, and lunchboxes across the globe, thanks in part to its irresistible mix of graphic storytelling and fast-paced middle-grade humor. And while Nate might never escape the watchful eye of Mrs. Godfrey or avoid the wrath of a pop quiz, he’ll keep showing up, pen in hand, ready to doodle his way through disaster. Because in his world, being a little loud, a little wrong, and a lot persistent is just part of the adventure.
