Michelle Sagara is the New York Times bestselling author of The Chronicles of Elantra series. Cast in Oblivion is the fourteenth book in this saga, which follows detective/mage Kaylin Neya as she struggles to protect the city of Elantra from the darkness that is determined to take root.

Kaylin and her friend were sent to the West March — without warning, explanation, or permission. Sadly, her friend is a Dragon and the West March is an ancient stronghold of the Barrani. The Barrani and the Dragons have a long history, where periods of extremely hostile politics were the peaceful breaks between all out war. Right now, they’re at peace — but some people aren’t happy about that. The presence of a Dragon in the West March is a prelude to war.

Kaylin wasn’t sent to the West March to start a war. She was sent to rescue nine Barrani — family to her other housemates. But it’s all gotten political, and internal Barrani politics aren’t a lot less deadly than Barrani-Dragon politics. She’s managed — barely — to help the Barrani evade both death and captivity at the hands of the Consort.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER?

Before the unplanned “visit” to the West March, Kaylin invited the Consort to dinner. For obvious reasons, Kaylin wants to cancel dinner — forever. The Consort doesn’t care. She’s going to show up at the front door at the agreed upon time. The fact that she tried to imprison Kaylin’s guests doesn’t matter at all — to her.

POLITICS ARE HELL.

But they aren’t the only Hell in Elantra. A private, Barrani Hell, built of Shadow and malice, exists beneath the High Halls from which the Barrani rule. It is the duty of the High Halls to keep that creature imprisoned — even if it means that Barrani victims are locked in his cage with him. The Consort is willing to do almost anything to free the trapped and end their eternal hell. And she needs the help of Kaylin’s houseguests — and Kaylin herself.

Failure isn’t death — it’s Hell. And that’s where Kaylin, and her Barrani friends, are going.
