Fourteen years after Thursday Next pegged out at Superhoop '88, her Jurisfiction job has been downgraded due to a potential conflict of interest, since her previous adventures are now themselves in print.

Thursday's time is spent worrying about her teenage son Friday and tutoring new recruits. This being fiction, however, jeopardy is never far away.

Sherlock Holmes is killed at the Rheinbach falls and his series is stopped in its tracks. Before this can be righted, Miss Marple dies in a narratively inexplicable car accident, bringing her series also to a close.

Thursday, receiving a death-threat clearly intended for her written self, realises what is going on - there is a serial killer is loose in the Bookworld.

Meanwhile, Goliath have perfected a 22-seater Prose Portal Luxury Coach, and plan on taking literary tourists on a holiday to the works of Jane Austen.

Thursday alone realises the true intent of Goliath's unwanted incursions into fiction, but she can't fight all these battles on her own. She must team up with the one person she really can't get along with - the written Thursday Next, currently starring in The Great Samuel Pepys Fiasco. But it's no time to be picky.

The series

Full series details →

In a world where books come to life, and the boundaries between reality and fiction are tantalizingly thin, Thursday Next introduces readers to a literary landscape like no other. Set in an alternate England where the written word has power beyond imagination, this series blends mystery, fantasy, and a bit of literary hijinks to create a story universe that feels both whimsically absurd and eerily familiar.

Read full series description

At the heart of the series is Thursday Next, a fiercely intelligent and resourceful literary detective who works for the Special Operations Network (SON). In her world, it's not unusual to step inside a book or for characters from the classics to leap off the page into real life. From investigating stolen plotlines to tracking down rogue literary figures, Thursday’s adventures unfold in a world filled with vibrant characters and a constant undercurrent of the impossible.

What makes Thursday Next stand out is its brilliant blend of intellectual humor, fast-paced plotting, and playful subversion of the literary world. From the very first book, readers are introduced to a world where time travel, alternate realities, and the theft of entire stories are not only possible but everyday occurrences. The stakes are high, and the twists come fast, yet Fforde manages to keep things light, with clever wordplay and cultural nods that make every page feel like a puzzle waiting to be solved.

As the series progresses, Thursday’s personal journey intertwines with her professional one, and her battles within the world of fiction become a reflection of her larger struggles in life. With a cast of unforgettable characters—ranging from a dashing, time-traveling hero to an enigmatic villain who plays by his own rules—the series offers more than just a thrilling adventure. It delves into themes of identity, creativity, and the power of storytelling, inviting readers to reconsider their own relationship with the books they love.

For those who enjoy a dose of wit, a dash of adventure, and a world where anything is possible—Thursday Next is an imaginative and endlessly entertaining series that keeps readers coming back for more, eager to see where the next chapter will take them. The blend of mystery, humor, and literary references makes this series a standout for fans of genre-bending fiction that is equal parts thoughtful and fun.
