These Rebel Waves (Stream Raiders #1) by Sara Raasch

The thrilling new fantasy series — full of deadly magic, double crosses, and a dangerous quest in a new world — from Sara Raasch, bestselling author of the Snow Like Ashes series

Adeluna is a soldier. Five years ago, she helped the magic-rich island of Grace Loray overthrow its oppressor, Argrid, a country ruled by religion. But adjusting to postwar life has not been easy. When an Argridian delegate vanishes during peace talks with Grace Loray’s new Council, Argrid demands brutal justice — but Lu suspects something more dangerous is at work.

Devereux is a pirate. As one of the outlaws called stream raiders who run rampant on Grace Loray, he pirates the island’s magic plants and sells them on the black market. But after Argrid accuses raiders of the diplomat’s abduction, Vex becomes a target. An expert navigator, he agrees to help Lu find the Argridian — but the truth they uncover could be deadlier than any war.

Benat is a heretic. The crown prince of Argrid, he harbors a secret obsession with Grace Loray’s forbidden magic. When Ben’s father, the king, gives him the shocking task of reversing Argrid’s fear of magic, Ben has to decide if one prince can change a devout country — or if he’s building his own pyre.

As conspiracies arise, Lu, Vex, and Ben will have to decide who they really are... and what they are willing to become for peace.

Sara Raasch

Sara Raasch

Sara Raasch has always been chasing stories. Long before her novels found their way onto New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists, she was a child in Ohio, sketching out picture books on folded paper and selling them alongside lemonade. That early spark never dimmed, it grew into a passion for fantasy that would carry her from her hometown cornfields to bookshelves around the world.

Her breakout moment came with Snow Like Ashes, a sweeping tale of kingdoms divided by magic and loyalty. Published in 2014 after years of persistence and six earlier manuscripts, the book captured readers with its icy landscapes and a heroine who learns that destiny is not a prophecy but a choice. It was quickly embraced by fantasy fans and went on to earn bestseller recognition. Two sequels, Ice Like Fire and Frost Like Night, completed the trilogy, cementing Raasch’s reputation for blending political intrigue with lyrical world-building.

Never content to linger in one world, she turned to new terrains with the These Rebel Waves duology, inspired by the Spanish Inquisition and the myths of piracy. These novels challenged old ideas of power and belief while delivering adventure on the high seas. Later collaborations expanded her reach: Set Fire to the Gods with Kristen Simmons reimagined gladiators as elemental fighters, while the Witch and Hunter duology, co-written with Beth Revis, played with vengeance, enchantment, and tangled allegiances.

More recently, Raasch has stepped boldly into adult romantasy and romantic comedy with books like The Nightmare Before Kissmas, Go Luck Yourself, and The Entanglement of Rival Wizards. These stories carry her signature mix of sharp wit, emotional intensity, and just enough magic to blur the edges of reality. Whether crafting perilous battles or playful banter, she has a gift for pulling readers into worlds where the stakes feel urgent and the characters unforgettable.

Behind the books is a writer who plans meticulously, using maps, spreadsheets, and outlines as part of her toolkit, but who also understands that the best moments often come from letting a character surprise her. She has spoken candidly about writing through both discipline and doubt, seeing creativity as something to wrestle with as much as to nurture.

Today, Raasch continues to write from her Ohio roots while drawing on her travels and research to bring depth to her work. Her novels invite readers to step into realms of magic, rebellion, and romance, while always grounding those stories in human struggles such as identity, freedom, and love that resonate far beyond the page.
