In a future where the Roman Empire never fell, but rose to conquer the galaxy, rival houses vie for supremacy.
Born into the noble House Viridian, Accala Viridius's privileged life is ripped apart when her mother is brutally murdered in the name of political power. Nineteen-year-old Accala vows to destroy those responsible: the leaders of House Sertorian, who cast a dark shadow of corruption over the Galactic Roman Empire. However, she is blocked in her quest for vengeance by her family's high position in Roman society and her father, who seeks to anchor her to a safe desk job in the imperial spy agency.
Determined to succeed, Accala sacrifices both rank and privilege and enlists in the Galactic Roman Legion as a dogsbody legionary - expendable, front-line soldiers who are sent into perilous conflict zones. Worse still, in order to carry out her plans for revenge, she is forced to sign on with a Sertorian legion, owned by the very family that killed her mother.
