The "forces" opposing the tyrant were paltry, their leaders few: Imperor Emshandar V – Shandie – deposed the very day he ascended the Opal Throne; the dwarf Raspnex, Zinixo's warlock uncle; and Rap himself, the stableboy who had been the most puissant sorcerer in all Pandemia – until he left his power behind for the woman he loved.

Now, as armies both magic and mundane swept across the lands, each rebel leader carried the flame of freedom to a different corner of troubled Pandemia. Shandie rode north – into disaster. Raspnex appeared, pursuing his own secret plans. And Rap toiled through fetid, steaming jungles in search of a powerful troll-witch who did not want to be found – all unaware that his loved ones were far from home, and further yet from any prayer of safety...
