As Bren and Jazz struggle to keep peace in L.OS.T., hunt for Bren's kidnapped brother, beat back the shapeshifting child-murderer that calls itself the Erlking, and hold their tattered relationship together, nightmares and bad omens mount. Soon there can be little doubt. The Erlking has found a way to bring Nire back from her exile.

When the bonfires of Beltane kindle and blaze, Jazz must face down her nemesis once more – and Bren must contend with the preparations to kill a wicked being about whom he has very mixed feelings.
