Worse Things Waiting

Downward to Darkness #2 / 2
by Brian McNaughton
Worse Things Waiting (Downward to Darkness #2) by Brian McNaughton
Unrated

Editorially altered version of Worse Things Waiting was published as Satan's Seductress. The restored text was published in 2000.

A sequel to Downward to Darkness.

The flashlight clattered to the floor and went out. The voice had come from a figure lying at the foot of the ladder. In the moment he had glimpsed the — man. An old man, naked and emaciated, and — wrong. Something was wrong with him.

Martin scrambled for the flashlight, turned it directly on the old man.

And saw the flies.

The man was covered from head to foot with a squirming mass that glittered blue and black and green in the beam of his light. Fighting back his revulsion, Martin ran to the man’s side and tried to bat the insects away, forcing himself to plunge his hand in and brush the flies from the old man’s face. The swarm exploded, momentarily blinding him. He spat and snorted and retched as he felt strays crawling in his mouth and nostrils.

When he groped for the man’s face, his fingers touched only bare floorboards.

Brian McNaughton

Brian McNaughton (1935–2004) was an American writer of horror and fantasy fiction who mixed sex, satire and black humour. He also wrote thrillers.

Brian McNaughton's work includes literary nods to writers such as H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith and Bram Stoker. His story "The Return of the Colossus" is a sequel to Smith's "The Colossus of Ylourgne" set during World War I; while the title of "To My Dear Friend Hommy-Beg" echoes Stoker's dedication for Dracula.
