The First book of the Crucible, an exciting new historical fantasy from the author of the popular Axis Trilogy.

'The Nameless Day' is the one day of the year when the world of man and the underworld touch. If this bridge between realms is left unguarded, the forces of evil will be free to crawl across the divide and invade Europe.

Knowledge of the threat is only held by the Pope, and one priest chosen by the archangel Michael. But Brother Wynkyn de Worde has grown old and the Papacy has moved to Aviginon; reduced to a puppet show for the French King. Vulnerable and alone Wynkyn cannot hope to hold back the malevolent spirits and force them back into the abyss of the Cleft.

During the mid-fourteenth century, thirty years after Brother Wynkyn's last mission, Thomas Neville, an English nobleman and priest, is sent to investigate the extent of the danger. But not even Neville is prepared for the Black Death, Littering Europe with thousands of putrid corpses.

The forces of Church and God must rally against the infiltration of the Devil's minions. The battle has begun.
