Deserted Cities of the Heart
Amid the Mayan ruins of Na Chan where, it is said, the bite of a sacred mushroom can send a man hurtling back in time, three people will plumb the very core of their lives.
Thomas is an idealistic ecologist about to hit burnout. His research facility has just been "nationalized" and his plans to save the world have crumbled to dust. Lindsay, long the object of his unrequited desire (and his brother Eddie's wife), has suddenly returned to his world in search of help. She tells him that Eddie, once an international rock superstar, has signed himself out of the psychiatric hospital where he'd been a patient for years and his been seen wandering the jungle. His quest for the roots of his art have already taken him on some strange and dangerous journeys, but the journey to Na Chan will be the strangest and most dangerous of all.
Thomas, Lindsay, and Eddie will find themselves in the midst of a revolution where soldiers and self-proclaimed freedom fighters kill without compunction. They will witness the truth behind the Mayan legend of Kukulkan and "the end of the cycle." And they will take part in a soul-changing odyssey into the Mayan underworld where extraordinary secrets are revealed.
