Camilla Sten

Swedish author Camilla Sten writes the kind of stories where isolation is rarely peaceful. Abandoned places, buried secrets, fractured relationships, and the uneasy suspicion that something is waiting just beyond sight have become recurring elements in her fiction, which moves between psychological suspense, horror, crime, and dark young adult fantasy.

Born in Sweden in 1992, Sten knew from an early age that she wanted to write. As a teenager, she set herself a deceptively simple challenge: write one page every day for a year. The result was her first attempt at a novel and the beginning of a habit that would eventually become a career. Books were already part of family life. Her mother, bestselling crime novelist Viveca Sten, became both an early reader and an important creative sounding board, and mother and daughter later collaborated on several novels for younger readers.

Sten found her international breakthrough with The Lost Village, originally published in Sweden as Staden in 2019. The novel follows a documentary crew investigating a remote Swedish mining village whose inhabitants mysteriously vanished decades earlier. Blending Scandinavian crime fiction with psychological horror and a haunting abandoned setting, the book introduced international readers to Sten's particular talent for creating dread without sacrificing the human mysteries underneath it. Rights were sold across numerous territories as the novel reached an audience far beyond Sweden.

Her later fiction has continued to explore fear through intensely personal situations. The Resting Place turns questions of memory, identity, and family history into a claustrophobic psychological thriller, while her other work ranges across suspense and young adult fiction. Rather than treating horror simply as a source of shocks, Sten often builds tension from uncertainty: what characters remember, what they believe about the people closest to them, and how much they can trust their own interpretation of events.

Although Sten grew up close to the world of Swedish crime fiction, her writing has developed a voice of its own, drawing together Nordic atmosphere, contemporary psychological suspense, and horror. Her stories are particularly interested in what happens when ordinary relationships are placed under extraordinary pressure, and in the secrets that can survive long after the people who created them are gone.
