Ira Nayman's The Alternate Reality News Service's Guide to Love, Sex and Robots is probably one of the funniest books published this year. It's a charmingly inventive and clever sci-fi humour book that will be of interest to everybody who loves good sci-fi humour.
This book doesn't contain a traditional narrative format, because it's a guide book to love, sex and robots. This book has been divided into seven sections:
1. Introduction
2. Girls
3. Boys
4. Girls and Boys
5. Girls and Boys and Family
6. Girls and Boys and Technology
7. Girls and Boys and Other Naughtiness
The introduction contains a marvellous and hilarious conversation between Brundtland-Govanni, Amritsar Al-Falloudjianapour, The Tech Answer Guy and The Language Corrector Dude. It's an interesting start to the rest of the book, because it gives a nice sample of what kind of humour the author has in store for his readers.
The Alternate Reality News Service's Guide to Love, Sex and Robots is a collection of questions and answers from two advice columns (Ask Amritsar and Ask The Tech Answer Guy). If you think this is your normal kind of advice book, you'd better think again, because the questions and answers are truly original.
If you thought that you knew everything there was to know about sex, love and robots, you're wrong. You've been missing out on a lot of information, because this book reveals all kinds of information about them. You'll learn totally new things about them, because the questions and answers are unique in their originality and craziness. Nothing is too bizarre or odd for Amritsar Al-Falloudjianapour and The Tech Answer Guy, because anybody can ask almost anything and they always supply an answer.
You'll have a chance to read how the advice columnists give advice how to name a child, how to have The Talk with the parents, how to buy a gift for a girlfriend, what is love, what do with a child that only eats brains, and how to kill intelligent house flies etc. These questions are only a few examples of what readers can expect when they begin to read this guide book, because the columnists give all kinds of advice from dating somebody to ferking somebody and from music to self-publishing.
If you aren't familiar with such terms as Obsessive Mopping Disorder and Micromoss, you'lll soon know what they mean when you finish reading this guide book. You'll also learn several new interesting terms, and you'll also learn the answers to such questions as "Are men obsolete?" and "What goes good with blood?".
The answers provided by Amritsar Al-Falloudjianapour and The Tech Answer Guy are humorous and not necessarily at all what you might expect them to be, which is very nice, because it makes this book refreshingly different. This guide book can be called a satire/parody of normal guide books. This book reminded me a bit of Stephen Fry's Mrs. Fry's Diary and How to Have an Almost Perfect Marriage, because Ira Nayman has the same kind of sarcastic and witty sense of humour as Stephen Fry. There are also echoes of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett in this book.
What's especially interesting about the answers given by Amritsar Al-Falloudjianapour and The Tech Answer Guy is that their own personal views are sometimes reflected in their answers. This adds a deliciously juicy flavour to their answers.
Because I'm an IT engineer by profession, I enjoyed reading about the questions and answeres concerning technology, computers and machines. The author has a wonderfully creative way of writing about technology.
I have to mention that I honestly wonder how the author has managed to come up with this book and all the material in it. This book is a brilliant example of sci-fi humour that's funny, clever and sarcastic. The author makes fantastic references to popular culture and internet culture, and coats everything with witty humour.
If you've ever read Douglas Adams and liked his humour, you MUST read Ira Nayman. Ira Nayman's humour is like a combination of Douglas Adams and Monty Python which has been stirred by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Fry. There are plenty of science fiction books out there, but only a few of them are humorous books and only a handful of these humourous books are as funny as this book.
The Alternate Reality News Service's Guide to Love, Sex and Robots is one of the funniest sci-fi books available. To be honest, it's simply hilarious! This book was so funny that it caused me a couple of sleepless nights, because I couldn't stop reading the questions and answers. If you've ever wanted to know what it feels to laugh out loud while reading science fiction, you must buy this book. The author has such an amazing, sarcastic, satirical and twisted sense of humour that you can't help but laugh while you read what he has written.
Highly recommended to everybody who likes sci-fi humour!
